Aquatilibus x Made in China
Voor dit project ontving ik in juni 2024 de Nieuwe Makersregeling van het Cultuurfonds.
Via een toen voor mij relatief nieuwe beeldende vorm - de fotografie - integreerde ik twee verschillende onderzoeksdomeinen (Aquatilibus en Made in China) binnen mijn praktijk. Ik creëer artificiële werelden, geïnspireerd door het werk van bioloog, filmer en fotograaf, Jean Painlevé, die in de 50er jaren onderwater fauna tot zijn specialiteit had.
Hierin krijgt de Neushoorn - een van de wonderlijke wezens, en vanaf maart 2025 ook andere ouderwetse plastic speelgoedbeesten (die ik eerder in mijn serie Made in China vanuit de waarneming schilderde en tekende) als artefact een nieuwe rol.
Zo ontstaat er een nieuwe surrealistische wereld, met overeenkomsten met mijn serie Aquatilibus, waarbij de verbeelding als bron ingezet wordt en de mogelijkheid aanwezig is, dat deze wereld zou kunnen bestaan.

For this project, I received the Nieuwe Makersregeling from the Cultural Fund in June 2024.
Through a then relatively new visual medium for me – photography – I integrated two different research domains (Aquatilibus and Made in China) within my practice. I create artificial worlds, inspired by the work of biologist, filmmaker, and photographer Jean Painlevé, who specialized in underwater fauna in the 1950s.
In this, the rhinoceros – one of the wondrous creatures, and from March 2025 onwards, other old-fashioned plastic toy animals (which I previously painted and drew from observation in my series Made in China) – take on a new role as artifacts.
This creates a new surreal world, with similarities to my series Aquatilibus, in which imagination is used as a source, and the possibility remains that this world could exist.
